Band...good for you. I am the same way. I am outgoing now.
You're a lawyer? I'm a court reporter going to law school.
Rethinking it now though.

Actually, I'm American but spent several years in the UK...in Reading, near London.
Miss it sometimes..right now I live near Philadelphia.
My son left yesterday. Miss him already!

Thanks, Cage!! No, he was not raised a JW. I made sure of that, but his childminder
was a JW. She was from a lovely family of 10 children, and they took very good care of
him, plus I knew that he was in good hands. He did go out in service a lot in his pushchair
with his childminder though....but he has always seen through the ruse and the hypocrisy
of the organisation, even at a young age. But I am sure I've done other things to cause him
to have issues!

Briffoux...that's exactly what he's doing. My uncle's company was contracted to do
the job. I guess if you're a train lover it's a dream opportunity!!! This is his first
"adult" decision and I think one that he will never forget.

First of all, thank you everyone for your advice. Some of it was a bit harsh,
but it made me scrutinize myself a bit more..but here is the outcome....and I
am so proud of him.
My mother came over last night and talked to my son. I stayed in the background and
listened. She said basically everything you lot were saying. He had tears in his eyes he
was so worried about letting his boss down. He stated he really wanted to go. Then all of
a sudden it clicked. He looked at me and said, "what time should I go in tomorrow to tell
him?" And that was it. He made the decision on his own and I stayed back and let him.
I followed him to the petrol station and got gas and coffee while he went to talk to his
boss in the back. I told him to just say that he made up his mind, he was going, and that
since he was due to work today in an hour, he would be happy to stay and work but that
on Sunday he was leaving for Dallas. I don't know exactly how it happened, but he came
out looking relieved and said he was working and it was done. I got my petrol and left.
I didn't even see his boss, but when I do next time, I plan on apologising for my actions,
but I think I will mention how my son struggled over the decision to the point of tears.
There are not that many 20-year-olds that would be that conscientious.
So he's off to Dallas. He will be working near the stadium, I think. He will be working with
steam trains, taking them apart and moving them to another location, and this is right where
he needs to be since the first word out of his mouth wasn't Mummy...it was choo choo, and since
then he's been obsessed with trains.
Thank you everyone for your input..even those of you who were a bit harsh on me.
Bit I think I probably had it coming!

All of you have said very truthful, eye-opening things. In hindsight, I should have
done things differently. I guess, in hindsight, I was trying to make up for the fact
that I left his father in the UK when he was eight and brought him back to the states
with me. Granted, he has had every summer, all summer except this last one because
of his job, and every Christmas in the UK. Or maybe it was just easier for me to do
things for him and now it's biting me in the arse. Is there any recourse for this?
Yes, he lives at home and he pays for his car and insurance but he surely couldn't
survive on his own paycheck. He doesn't want to go to even tech school...it's hard
for me to fathom since I've always been so motivated and gone for what I wanted.
Maybe I've just eclipsed him. I am feeling like a terrible mother now.

Shirley W, you're right. I called his boss for him..and perhaps this is all my fault. Perhaps
I've done too much for him. I don't know. I just don't want this opportunity to go for him.
Gayle, he has talked to his uncle. I do think he wants to go but doesn't want to
disappoint his boss. With three sons, is that how you would handle this?
He'll be a 40-year-old petrol station worker living with me!
